Scientists want to know if the bloom is drifting north. The Southern California coast is currently dealing with a bloom toxic to animals. A vacuum pump sucks the sample through a 0.45um filter, which is then removed and placed into a test tube for microscopic study. Every few transects, seawater is collected and tested for Harmful Algal Bloom (HABs). In the Chemistry Lab, there are a variety of ongoing tests. Hake are not the only thing being studied during this mission.
