I’m talking about the politics that surrounds how games are made, who gets to make them, and who gets to play them. No, Diablo isn’t necessarily making some grand statement about this or that political viewpoint, but politics is threaded through many of the series’s most important moments.īut I’m not really talking about game lore. Even the most jaded (or intellectually stunted) person can see that politics plays an important role in the lore of Diablo. I could go on and on, but that’s not necessary. The peasants of Tristram were, like the peasants of our own real world, disposable to those who wore the crown. People (though, in the eyes of the crown, probably not recognized as people) with little political and economic power and authority. His knights sack towns and force them into political and social obedience. As he goes mad, he exercises his royal power–power that he claimed for himself based on his religious affiliation–to execute anyone who challenges his power and authority. But who does he bring with him to Khanduras? Knights, priests–military and religious orders with tremendous political import. The story of Leoric’s downfall is a story about a theocratic ruler who establishes a kingdom, encounters otherworldly forces, and succumbs to dark temptations. When you enter his domain, every class has a different reaction, and their world-views are expressed therein. He betrayed the collective tribes of the Barbarians, a political body (likely a tribal confederacy), and he did it over a political disagreement with his fellow councilmen about how (and maybe why) they should take action to deter Baal’s conquest. What is the story of Diablo if not a story of the wars between Heaven, Hell, and the peoples of Sanctuary? When Nihlathak betrayed Harrogath, he betrayed more than just a city. Please tell me why Diablo games should have anything to do with politics in them…īecause they always have.
